We all need a Pu'uhonua.
Everyone needs a place where they can feel safe and protected.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by stress, responsibilities, or the pressure to be perfect. When things get tough you need a spot where you can step back, catch your breath, and clear your mind.
In Hawaiian culture a Pu'uhonua was more than just a refuge, it was a sacred space that offered a second chance. These places were established as sanctuaries during times when Hawaiian law was strict and breaking any kapu (sacred law) often meant a death sentence. If someone could reach a designated Pu'uhonua they were granted safety and forgiveness, allowing them to be absolved of their crimes. It was a place where individuals could find shelter, heal, and Receive a fresh start.Â
Your refuge doesn’t have to be a physical place -- it could be spending time with people who support you, taking a walk to clear your head, or simply being alone with your thoughts. The important thing is that it’s a place where you can let your guard down and recharge, free from worry and persecution.
Having a place of refuge means you’re giving yourself permission to pause and reset. It’s where you can sort out your thoughts, regain your strength, and figure out what to do next without the weight of expectations. Your refuge is there to help you find balance and give you the time you need to face whatever comes next.
