You Are Rarely Your Own Target Market.
When initially working with marketing and advertising clients I have found many lean toward marketing messages and media that they themselves prefer. If they are a sports fan they want to advertise on a sports radio station. If they read a specific magazine they want to advertise in that same magazine, etc.
While some of your company's ideal prospects may look like you and like some of the things you do, don't overlook the larger pool of prospects with whom you may have absolutely nothing in common.
You don't need to market to yourself.
You are already familiar with your own needs and wants and the features and benefits of what your business provides. You won't be persuaded by the same messages and media that someone less familiar with your company and services will.
Your target market is the group of people who are most likely to be interested in your product or service, but who may not be aware of it (or you) yet. To reach your target market you need to understand their needs and wants (not yours), and then craft marketing messages that appeal to them and place them in media they consume.
Here are some tips for identifying and reaching your target market:
Do your research. The first step is to understand your target market. What are their demographics? What are their interests? What are their pain points? Once you know your target market, you can start to create marketing messages that appeal to them.
Be specific. Your marketing messages should be specific and relevant to your target market. Don't just talk about your product or service in general terms. Tell them how it can solve their problems or improve their lives.
Be consistent. Your marketing messages should be consistent across all channels. This means using the same branding, messaging, and tone of voice in all of your advertising.
Track your results. It's important to track the results of your marketing campaigns so that you can see what's working and what's not. This will help you to improve your campaigns over time.
What problems are your customers facing?
How can your product or service solve them?
Answering these questions makes your marketing easier.
When in doubt about your marketing strategy, consult a professional.
