BYS 05/14/23 🟨 Mom Time
No big surprise in today's post...
Just a brief message to those lucky enough to still have their moms around to go and spend some time with them. And for those of you like me who've lost their mothers way too soon, spend some time today thinking about her.
Your mom says you should read today's Big Yellow Sticky…
Go Spend Some Time With Your Mom,
May is a rough month for me.
I was raised by both my mother and her mother (that's my grandmother for those of you who are really bad at genealogy) and both of them have passed away over the years, so that makes Mother's Day twice as sad for me. Factor in that both of their birthdays were also in May and this month tends to be one filled with a bit of melancholia mixed with nostalgia and a sense of mortality for me.
I got a healthy sense of curiosity, creativity, and books from my Mom, and a love words, puzzles, and my sarcastic sense of humor from my grandmother. When I look at my bookshelves or jot down a new idea, I think of my mom. When I'm playing Scrabble or Wordle or a crossword puzzle (or come up with a sick burn!), I think of my Gram.
It used to annoy me when my mother would call asking for help with silly things like her computer getting disconnected form the wifi, or her cable connection wasn't working correctly. My mom was a smart lady and I knew she was able to work through reconnecting her printer or unplugging and rebooting her internet router -- but I was the idiot who didn't realize these were just easy excuses to get her "busy" son on the phone and have him come over to her house to fix the problem.
If your mom is still around and happy and healthy, but you've skipped a few recent visits to see her because you've been "too busy", get over yourself. Stop what you're doing and go spend some time with your mom.
You'll never regret looking back on a couple extra silly trips to spray some WD-40 on squeaky door or change a light bulb or bring up a box from the basement.
Take it from a guy who'd give anything for a call from his mom asking for the 50th time which remote works the television and which one works the DVD player.
Happy Mother's Day.
Stop reading this email and go hug your mom.
I’ll be back tomorrow.
I'm not crying... YOU'RE crying...
