BYS 01/23/23 : What are you looking for?
That's what you're going to find.
Do you see more good or bad in the world?
If you spend your time watching tv news or most social media feeds, you probably feel like the world is darker and more negative than people who invest their time in more positive and productive pursuits.
For a few ideas on how to see (and be) more positive, scroll down to today’s Big Yellow Sticky…
What you find depends on what you’re looking for. Are you looking for all the good or bad in people and the world?
The idea that "if you look for the good, you'll find it" means your perspective and mindset directly influences your perception of the world.
If you choose to focus on positive elements, you are more likely to find them. Conversely, if you choose to focus on negative elements, they are more likely to find those as well.
To maintain a positive outlook, actively seek out the good in the world -- even when you are faced with difficult or challenging situations.
Optimism has been linked to improved mental and physical health, better relationships, and greater success in life. By looking for the good in people, situations, and events, it's more likely to increase your own well-being and happiness (and that of those around you.)
This doesn’t mean that you should ignore or overlook negative aspects of the world (you still want to be careful if you’re walking through a parking lot alone at night), but choosing to focus on positive elements will help you maintain a happier perspective in life.
Try looking for these positive things in the world and you’ll find them…
Focus on stories and examples of individuals helping others
Look for volunteers doing good works, charitable donations, and simple acts of kindness.
Look at your own personal achievements
The goals you’ve reached, new skills you’ve learned, and the challenges you've overcome.
Look for the natural beauty in the world
Stare in wonder and awe of scenic landscapes, sunsets, and wildlife.
Look at the advancements in science and technology
There are a million little things out there that are helping to improve the lives of people around the block and around the globe.
Look for your connections to others
Reach out and touch base with your family, friends, and members of your community.
Look at the richness and diversity of art and culture
Seek out music, literature, and theater from around the world.
Look for people who inspire you
Watch for the people achieving great things and overcoming adversity.
It's important to remember that everyone's perspective is different, and what one person finds positive another might not. The key is to find what resonates with you and brings you joy and positivity. I know a guy who starts every morning by reading a Calvin & Hobbes comic -- there are worse ways to start the day!
Be positive of the things in your life.
