Kuleana
”One’s responsibility to life and the community.”
Today was our last day on the Big Island of Hawai'i and I knew pretty far in advance which word I want to end this series with... Kuleana.
Kuleana is a deeply rooted Hawaiian concept that translates as "responsibility" or "privilege." Kuleana speaks to the idea of taking ownership and recognizing one’s role in life and community. Kuleana means more than just responsibility or obligation. Kuleana represents a personal sense of duty, accountability, and privilege that comes with being a part of the island 'ohana.
Kuleana is about recognizing your unique role and the contributions you are meant to make, whether it’s caring for the land, preserving traditions, or supporting others. In Hawaiian culture, kuleana isn’t just about what you have to do -- it’s about what you are entrusted with and the opportunity to honor that trust by living with integrity, respect, and purpose.
Embracing your kuleana as an entrepreneur means recognizing that your journey is both a responsibility and a privilege. You have the opportunity to shape your own path, build something meaningful, and contribute to the lives of others. It’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind or be overwhelmed by challenges, but when you remember that your work isn’t just about profits or success, but about the impact you’re making, it changes your perspective.
Taking ownership of your kuleana means being accountable for your choices and how you show up every day. It’s about pushing forward even when things get tough and finding ways to serve your customers, employees, and community with integrity.
This sense of responsibility isn’t a burden, it’s a chance to make a real difference. When you embrace your kuleana fully you’ll find that it not only drives your business forward but also gives deeper meaning and purpose to everything you do.
